Matthew Szewczyk is a filmmaker and creative director with a decade in the trenches, writing, directing, and crafting moments that move people (and product). His work spans commercial, branded, and narrative film, with clients ranging from Uber, Hurley, and Unilever to Hulu, Ridley Scott Associates, and a few punk bands that never made it past Brooklyn.
He won Best Director at the Studio City International Film Festival for The Right Hand of God, a surveillance thriller with a slow burn and sharp edges. His music video for Honduras was nominated for a Los Angeles Music Video Award and banned from Facebook for “graphic content” (which he still counts as a win). In 2025, the AI trailer for his script VAMPIRE TOUCHDOWN was produced by The Dor Brothers.
Matthew wrote and directed The Return, based on the true story of a Filipino immigrant who was trafficked and held captive in suburban Orange County. Starring Aina Dumlao (MacGyver, The Unusual Suspects), the film premiered at Dances With Films, was adopted into Southern California high school curricula, and has racked up over 850,000 views online.
He cut his teeth in development, working on Steve McQueen’s abandoned Fela Kuti biopic. He holds an MFA in Directing from Chapman University, but his real education came from staying late, watching everything, and arguing about it later over cheap beer.
When he’s not on set or in the edit bay, he’s a devotee of loud rooms and live sets, a speed skier, and an amateur scholar of apocalyptic religions and commercial airline disasters.
